Human
[edit | edit source]The youngest major race, descended from vrykul exiles who built the Empire of Arathor and its seven splinter kingdoms. Endured the Scourge's devastation of Lordaeron and the fall of Arthas, and now stand as the Alliance's leading power from Stormwind under High King Anduin Wrynn. Blend a strong martial and Holy Light tradition with notable aptitude for arcane magic.
Dwarf
[edit | edit source]Descended from the stone-born earthen, transformed by the Curse of Flesh into short, hardy craftsmen who built Ironforge and the kingdom of Khaz Modan. Long split into the Bronzebeard, Wildhammer, and Dark Iron clans, now reunited under the Council of Three Hammers. Culture prizes smithing, mining, archaeology, and the Holy Light.
Gnome
[edit | edit source]Tiny, endlessly inventive descendants of the mechagnomes, discovered by the dwarves in Dun Morogh and famed for building the techno-city of Gnomeregan. Survived a radiation catastrophe that devastated their population and forced a long exile, now reclaiming their home under King Gelbin Mekkatorque. Prize invention and technology above almost all else.
Ancient, near-immortal kaldorei transformed by the Well of Eternity, once rulers of a vast arcane empire under Queen Azshara. Lost that empire in the War of the Ancients and turned to druidism and the worship of Elune, later losing their World Tree Teldrassil to Sylvanas's Horde. Now rebuilding at Bel'ameth under Tyrande Whisperwind and Malfurion Stormrage.
Horde
[edit | edit source]Orc
[edit | edit source]Once peaceful shamanistic clans of Draenor, corrupted by the Burning Legion into the blood-bound Old Horde under Gul'dan. Freed from their demonic taint by Thrall and Grom Hellscream, they founded a new Horde and the city of Orgrimmar. Culture centers on clan honor, mak'gora duels, and a revived reverence for the elements.
The largest playable race, bovine shu'halo transformed by the Well of Eternity and long harried as nomads by the centaur. Allied with Thrall to reclaim Mulgore and found Thunder Bluff, now led by Baine Bloodhoof. Deeply shamanistic culture reveres the Earth Mother and treats death as a natural continuation of life.
Troll
[edit | edit source]The Darkspear tribe, gentler descendants of the shattered Gurubashi Empire who fled persecution to remote islands before allying with Thrall under Vol'jin. Resettled the Echo Isles off Durotar and remain steadfast Horde members. Culture is rooted in voodoo, shadow magic, and worship of the loa spirits.
Free-willed undead who broke the Lich King's control after the Third War, rebuilding the Undercity beneath ruined Lordaeron under Sylvanas Windrunner. Allied with the Horde for protection while embracing undeath, necromancy, and free will as core to their identity. Now governed collectively by the Desolate Council after Sylvanas's betrayal.
