Overview

The playable trolls of the Horde are the Darkspear tribe, descendants of the shattered Gurubashi Empire of Stranglethorn Vale. Gentler and less warlike than their fellow Gurubashi, the Darkspears endured generations of persecution and famine before abandoning their homeland to settle remote islands off Kalimdor's coast.

Everything changed during the Third War, when the tribe's aging chieftain Sen'jin was killed defending his people; in the aftermath, his son Vol'jin — a shadow hunter — forged an alliance with the young Warchief Thrall. The Darkspears joined the fledgling Horde and eventually resettled the Echo Isles off Durotar's coast, later briefly losing their islands to the treacherous witch doctor Zalazane before reclaiming them.

Darkspear troll culture remains rooted in the worship of the loa — powerful nature spirits and ancestral gods — channeled through voodoo, shadow magic, and the guidance of witch doctors and shadow hunters. Leadership traditionally passes down chieftain bloodlines, tempered by counsel from tribal elders. The Darkspears are staunch members of the Horde.
