Overview
[edit | edit source]The Forsaken are the free-willed undead of Lordaeron — former victims of the Lich King's Scourge who broke free of his mental domination in the wake of the Third War, regaining their memories and their independence. Under the banshee Sylvanas Windrunner, once ranger-general of Silvermoon, these liberated undead built the Undercity in the ruins of Lordaeron's capital and forged their own kingdom.
Facing persecution from the living, Sylvanas struck an alliance with the Horde, framing the Forsaken's goal as a search for a cure to undeath. The arrangement gave the Horde a foothold in the Eastern Kingdoms and endured through wars with the Scarlet Crusade and the betrayal at the Wrathgate, though it fractured when Sylvanas abandoned her people during the Fourth War. The Forsaken have since reorganized under the collective leadership of the Desolate Council, formed to reflect the race's belief that its diverse survivors are better served by shared rule than by a single monarch.
Forsaken culture embraces undeath rather than mourning it: the Undercity operates without rest, necromancy, alchemy, and body modification are common tools of survival, and free will — the very thing the Scourge denied them — sits at the center of Forsaken identity. Many still carry deep trauma from their years as mindless servants of the Lich King, and adjustment to their new existence varies wildly from one Forsaken to the next.
