Overview

Dwarves are a short, stout, and famously hardy people, descended from the earthen — living stone beings crafted by the keeper Khaz'goroth during the shaping of Azeroth. When the Curse of Flesh struck the earthen, they emerged from the vaults of Uldaman as flesh-and-blood dwarves and, over the following centuries, built the kingdom of Khaz Modan and its great capital, Ironforge.

Dwarven unity fractured after the death of High King Modimus Anvilmar in the War of the Three Hammers: the Bronzebeard clan held Ironforge, the Wildhammers withdrew to Grim Batol and later Aerie Peak, and the Dark Irons — after accidentally unleashing the fire lord Ragnaros beneath Blackrock Mountain — founded Shadowforge City. That split endured for generations even as dwarves fought alongside humans in the Second War and became one of the Alliance's founding races. During the Cataclysm, King Magni Bronzebeard was transformed into living diamond in a ritual to save Azeroth; his daughter Moira, the Dark Iron regent, joined Muradin Bronzebeard and Wildhammer thane Falstad in the Council of Three Hammers, reuniting the three clans under shared rule for the first time in centuries.

Dwarven culture is built around craftsmanship — mining, smithing, engineering, and stonework are sources of both livelihood and pride — and clan lineage remains central to personal identity and status. Most dwarves follow the Holy Light, adopted from the humans, while still honoring their titan-forged origins, and a taste for archaeology, exploration, ale, and pipe-weed runs throughout the culture.
