Overview

[edit | edit source]

Gnomes are a diminutive, endlessly inventive people standing barely over three feet tall, descended from the mechagnomes — mechanical constructs built by the titan Keeper Mimiron. Like the dwarves, the mechagnomes succumbed to the Curse of Flesh and degenerated into small, organic beings with an unshakeable obsession for technology. Discovered by the dwarves in the mountain caverns of Dun Morogh roughly 2,500 years ago, the gnomes built the subterranean techno-city of Gnomeregan and became close allies of their new neighbors.

Gnomish ingenuity powered much of the Alliance's war effort during the Second War, but disaster struck when troggs breached Gnomeregan's lower levels; High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque, deceived by his trusted advisor Sicco Thermaplugg, authorized a radiation purge that killed roughly four-fifths of the gnomish population and forced survivors to flee to Ironforge's Tinker Town. Mekkatorque has since led a long, gradual reclamation of Gnomeregan, and the discovery of Mechagon Island reunited gnomes with their long-lost mechagnome cousins, culminating in his coronation as King of all Gnomes.

Gnomish culture prizes forward-thinking invention over dwelling on history, and for roughly four centuries the gnomes governed themselves not through monarchy but by electing High Tinkers on merit rather than birthright. Conflict between gnomes is almost unheard of; the loss of Gnomeregan, however, has made the once purely cerebral race considerably more willing to take up arms alongside their machines.
