The Temple of Atal'Hakkar is a sunken temple in the Swamp of Sorrows, where the Atal'ai trolls try to summon the Blood God Hakkar.

Better known as the Sunken Temple, it is a multi-level ruin half-submerged in the Pool of Tears, full of trolls, undead and corrupted green dragons. Both factions run it, and it's the centre of several class quests. Its level range is above what the Forever beta had opened at the time of writing, so this page is mostly based on Classic data.

Very little Forever-specific data exists for this dungeon yet. Content marked as Classic data may change before launch on 4 November 2026.

History

Lore from Classic – Forever may differ.

Long ago, the Atal'ai priests of the Gurubashi Empire worshipped the Blood God Hakkar the Soulflayer and tried to summon him into the world. The other trolls rose against them, and the Atal'ai fled to the swamps, where they built a great temple to their god. The dragon Aspect Ysera saw the danger and sank the temple beneath the Pool of Tears.

The Atal'ai never gave up. Hidden in the drowned temple, they still work to bring Hakkar back, and they've been joined by green dragons sent by Ysera to guard the temple. Those dragons have been corrupted by the Emerald Nightmare, including their leader, Eranikus.

Getting there

The temple lies in the Pool of Tears, in the eastern part of the Swamp of Sorrows. Groups swim out to the ruined temple and climb down through the ruins to the instance portal. The nearest flight path is Stonard for the Horde, or Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands for the Alliance.

Bosses

Classic data – Forever may differ.
  • Atal'alarion – a stone guardian, released by activating the temple's statues in the right order.
  • The Atal'ai troll defenders – six trolls (Gasher, Loro, Hukku, Zolo, Mijan and Zul'Lor) on the balconies around the central chamber. Killing all six opens the way to Jammal'an.
  • Jammal'an the Prophet and Ogom the Wretched – the leaders of the Atal'ai. Jammal'an can mind-control a player and heals.
  • Dreamscythe and Weaver – two corrupted green dragons.
  • Avatar of Hakkar – summoned in the central chamber using the Egg of Hakkar, by collecting Hakkari blood and extinguishing the braziers around the circle.
  • Morphaz and Hazzas – more corrupted green dragons.
  • Shade of Eranikus – the corrupted consort of Ysera and the final boss.

The Sunken Temple's full loot tables are listed on wowtbc.gg. None of it had been confirmed on the Forever beta at the time of writing.

Quests

Classic data – Forever may differ.
Quest Faction Objective
Into the Temple of Atal'Hakkar Both Collect Atal'ai Tablets for Brohann Caskbelly (Alliance, Stormwind) or Fel'Zerul (Horde, Stonard).
The Temple of Atal'Hakkar Both Collect Fetishes of Hakkar for the Atal'ai Exile or Fel'Zerul.
Jammal'an the Prophet Both Bring back the head of Jammal'an for the Atal'ai Exile in the Hinterlands.
The God Hakkar Both Use the Egg of Hakkar to capture the essence of Hakkar's avatar, for Yeh'kinya in Tanaris. This continues the chain started in Zul'Farrak.
The Essence of Eranikus Both Recover the Essence of Eranikus from the Shade of Eranikus.

The temple is also the goal of several level 50 class quests, which usually need a drop from one of the corrupted green dragons.

Tips

  • Learn the statue order for Atal'alarion before you go; it saves a lot of time.
  • Watch for Jammal'an's mind control, and interrupt his heals.
  • The Avatar of Hakkar event needs the Egg of Hakkar from Yeh'kinya's quest. Coordinate who's carrying it.
