Wailing Caverns is a dungeon in the caves beneath the Barrens, where the druid Naralex's dream turned into a nightmare that twisted his Druids of the Fang.

It is a large, winding cave system with eight bosses and a closing escort event. It's a staple of Horde levelling in the late teens, but it sits in contested territory, so both factions run it and several of its quests are open to both.

Information on this page comes from the Forever beta (client builds 1.60.1.69913 to 1.60.1.70009, September 2026). Stats, drops and quest rewards can still change before launch on 4 November 2026.

History

[edit | edit source]
Lore from Classic – Forever may differ.

The night elf druid Naralex came to the Barrens hoping to use the Emerald Dream to heal the dry, dying land. He and his followers, the Druids of the Fang, went down into the caves beneath the Barrens to perform the ritual. Instead, the dream turned into the Emerald Nightmare. Naralex became trapped in an endless, screaming sleep, and his anguish seeped into the caves. The springs turned foul, the local beasts mutated into the "deviate" creatures, and the Druids of the Fang themselves were twisted into fanatics who now worship the nightmare. The cries that echo out of the caves at night gave the place its name.

Naralex's surviving disciples cannot wake him while the four Fanglords – Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn, Lord Pythas and Lord Serpentis – keep their hold over him. Adventurers are asked to kill all four so that the Disciple of Naralex can attempt the ritual to wake him.

Getting there

[edit | edit source]

The entrance is a cave mouth in the ravine south of the Lushwater Oasis, south-west of the Crossroads, at roughly 46, 36 on the Barrens map. The cave carved into the cliff above the entrance (the face-shaped rock) holds the Disciples of Naralex, Ebru and Nalpak, who give two of the dungeon quests. The nearest flight path is the Crossroads.

Changes from Classic

[edit | edit source]
  • Group size is 5 players.
  • Loot has been re-itemised. Boss drops are now item level 21–25, and the Druid of the Fang armour set (Belt, Armor, Leggings, Footpads and Gloves) is flagged as changed in Forever.
  • Quest experience seen in beta play is much higher than in Classic.
  • No lockout has been seen on the beta so far.

Leaders of the Fang chain

[edit | edit source]

This Horde chain starts with Arch Druid Hamuul Runetotem in Thunder Bluff, who sends you to Tonga Runetotem at the Crossroads (The Barrens Oases). Tonga has you investigate the Forgotten Pools and the Stagnant Oasis, and then collect Altered Snapjaw Shells (Altered Beings). He then sends you back to Hamuul, who passes you on to Nara Wildmane, who gives Leaders of the Fang.

Smart Drinks chain

[edit | edit source]

Mebok Mizzyrix in Ratchet first asks for 5 Intact Raptor Horns from Sunscale Scytheclaws in the Barrens (Raptor Horns). Smart Drinks follows once that's done.

The Glowing Shard

[edit | edit source]

Mutanus drops the Glowing Shard. Take it to Ratchet to find out what it is, then deliver it as you're told. It continues into In Nightmares: Horde players take the Nightmare Shard to Hamuul Runetotem in Thunder Bluff, Alliance players to Mathrengyl Bearwalker in Darnassus. The In Nightmares step is given by Falla Sagewind in the Barrens (48.2, 32.8).

Denizens

[edit | edit source]
Classic data – Forever may differ.
  • Bosses: Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn, Kresh, Lord Pythas, Skum, Lord Serpentis, Verdan the Everliving, Mutanus the Devourer
  • Rares: Deviate Faerie Dragon, Mad Magglish (goblin carrying the 99-Year-Old Port)
  • Druids of the Fang: Druid of the Fang and the four Fanglords
  • Deviate creatures: Deviate Ravager, Deviate Viper, Deviate Shambler, Deviate Dreadfang, Deviate Stalker, Deviate Crocolisk and other mutated beasts
  • NPCs: Disciple of Naralex, Naralex, Ebru, Nalpak
  • Collect the outside quests first: Ratchet (two), Thunder Bluff (Serpentbloom and Leaders of the Fang) and the cave above the entrance (two).
  • Serpentbloom are glowing plants scattered through the caves. Gather them as you go rather than doubling back.
  • The caves are easy to get lost in. Stick together and don't jump off ledges unless someone knows the shortcut.
  • Every Fanglord heals and casts Sleep, so interrupts and dispels make the run much smoother.
  • Plan at least an hour and clear your bags before starting.
